Can you tell me some strategies for teaching ESL student(s)

I don't know if I can give one single answer on the best possible strategy. From my experience working with TalktoCanada and its staff, it's hard to agree on which strategies are the best. For every new situation and student you have to ask yourself if your strategy for a more advanced student would be applicable to a student who is just starting to learn English. If you are doing one on one English lessons it's going to be a lot easier to implement strategies that work than if you had a class of 30. I have both respect and praise for those teachers who have to work with more than one ESL student at a time. All the time you have to make compromises that will benefit the majority while leaving some behind.

I apologize if this answer is very vague but it's really up to the teacher to improvise and make it work. The tutors at TalktoCanada are great for doing this and work much differently with students who are beginners over more advanced students. If you let the students determine the strategy for teaching, you will be far better off than those teachers who come with a one size fits all strategy. Hopefully all your students, if you have more than one will be at the same level and than you can teach effectively to a larger portion of them.
