Q - In English when should we use "May" and "Can".

The main distinction between "can" and "may" that is important to remember is that "may" is used as a possibility in sentences while "can" should be used when referring to a capability. To understand what possibility and capability means I went to an online dictionary provided by MSN Encarta. Possibility is defined as "the state of being possible: the condition or quality of being possible". Capability is defined as a "range of ability: the potential ability of somebody or something to do something". Below are four sentences that differentiate between "can" and "may".

  • I can deliver the goods by Friday. (capability)
  • I may be able to deliver the goods by Friday. (possibility)
  • I can develop a website for you. (capability)
  • May I develop a website for your company. (possibility)
